This may be more noticeable with the audio version, because the narrator, Ralph Lister, reads vivaciously, so these expressions of enthusiasm seem a little overdone. The quality of the writing is quite good except for the overuse of phrases such as “to my amazement,” “to my surprise,” “I found it strange that,” “I marveled,” “I was astonished,” “I looked at him dumb-founded,” “I was thunder-struck,” etc. After finishing book 3, Priest-Kings of Gor, here’s my take so far: I guess it’s partly because Brilliance Audio has kindly sent them to me (they are nice productions), but it’s also largely because these books have been maligned for years as poorly written sexist-BDSM-erotica, so I can’t help but want to see for myself before dismissing them as such. ![]() I’m not sure why I’m still reading the Gor books. ![]() 6/7/2023 0 Comments Willa cather 1918 novel![]() ![]() ![]() I was something that lay under the sun and felt it, like the pumpkins, and I did not want to be anything more. “The earth was warm under me, and warm as I crumbled it through my fingers…I kept as still as I could. My reading experience may have been affected by my tiredness this week, because although I did enjoy this book very much – I didn’t love the second half of the book as much as the first half – or as much as the Willa Cather novel I read a few months ago – O Pioneers. I had remembered nothing of this novel really – just knew that I had enjoyed it – probably twenty odd years ago. I have been, and am still so very tired – that I am struggling to read for long in the evenings – and am now finding it hard to marshal my own thoughts and reactions. The story of a love affair between L a, a still-beautiful 49-year-old ex-courtesan, and Ch ri, a handsome but selfish young man 30 years her junior, it offers a superb study of age and sexuality, written in a personal style that reveals the author's keen powers of observation. Published when the author, like her heroine, was in her late 40s, Ch ri is a delicate analysis of a May-December romance. By the time Ch ri was published in 1920, Colette had become well known both as a writer and as a personality and was entering a period of rich personal growth and happiness. But eventually she broke free of this unhappy marriage and took flight on her own, as a fiction writer, a journalist, and an actress. Her husband, a Parisian man-about-town and the son of a major publisher, made use of her literary talents by publishing her first several novels under his own name - his only changes, evidently, being to make them more prurient.
